Because Jesus did rise from the dead, he said we also would rise to be with him (John 11:25,26). But just think how excited the disciples got when they got to touch and handle Jesus when he appeared to them the second time around.
Jesus would appear nine times in human form after his resurrection from the dead. Here are the meetings that took place from Sunday (the resurrection) to Sunday (the following week).
A) Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9, Luke 8:2,3).
B) Two men walking toward the village of Emmaus. (Luke 24:13-33). Wow! Talk about a surprise visit. The Bible tells us that we should be careful to entertain strangers, because they could be angels. Of course, this was someone greater than angels (Hebrews 13:1,2).
C) Absenteeism can cause you to miss important glorious events that you may never get a chance again. Thomas missed out the first time. From Passover meal to here, Jesus would meet his disciples again (John 20:19).
The following week after Jesus’ resurrection (April 16 after sunset, Nisan 26 eighth), Jesus miraculously manifests himself again to his disciples, but this time Thomas is present (John 20:26 – 29).
Yes, Thomas missed out the first time. But when the opportunity to be with your brothers in Christ and hear them tell you Jesus has risen, you don’t want to miss out on a third time. In baseball terms, three misses, and you may be out.
This was the fourth time Jesus had shown himself alive to prove he had risen from the dead. The other days really picked up and more miraculous events to place. Jesus appeared to over five hundred brethren at one time after his resurrection (1Corinthians 15:6).
Jesus kept his appointment date with his disciples to meet them in Galilee (Matthew 26:32). This special meeting ended up taking place. (Matthew 28:16,17). So many things continue to happen after Easter Sunday. Are you starting to grasp how much you can miss when you fail to gather with those who experience God’s outpouring power of love Sunday to Sunday?
Like a physician making his rounds to check on his patients, Jesus was not done appearing before his disciples, his children. Jesus appeared to seven of his disciples while they are fishing on Lake Galilee (John 21:1 – 24).
Jesus even showed his miraculous power once again as Peter and the disciples caught 153 fish in the net. This also was the time Jesus showed up to have a serious topic about love with Peter. How could you miss the Sunday after Easter knowing real love is ready to grab hold of your heart.
But the grandiose appearance approximately May 18 (Iyar 27, 3790), came on the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:1-11). How do you miss out on the great commission? How do you miss out on the great ascension in history? The disciples were thoroughly bought in to what Jesus had instruction them to do.
